What is Native Seeding?

Did you know that 85% percent of Iowa’s land was once prairie? In the time since Iowa was settled, only 0.02% of Iowa’s original prairie remains. Perry Turf and Seed gives landowners the opportunity to help restore their land to the way it once was!

Native prairie grasses and forbs (flowering plants) naturally are resilient to Iowa’s climate. Unlike standard turfgrasses common in today’s lawns, many native species thrive in the heat. In fact they do most of their growing in the summer time! Here are a few reasons why we love native lawns and prairies:

  • Deep, deep roots. There are some root systems that grow 12 feet below the surface! Native plants are seldom stressed because they were made to survive the Iowa heat. They are quite at home during the 100 degree days in July!

  • Habitat for Iowa’s wildlife. While you likely won’t see any buffalo appear on your native prairie, you may expect to see the return of small mammals, birds, and insects that support the greater ecosystem of your neighborhood and county.

  • The best natural water absorber. Water runoff has always been a concern in Iowa. When water runs off the land into streams, we lose our nutrient dense topsoil. Native prairies slow the flow of water and allow it time to seep into the soil. Long term this means a happy ecosystem and better soil and water for generations to come.
